- When to Prune?
- Winter Pruning: November to March on frost-free days. It makes it easier to assess the tree in its leafless state and promotes growth and branching.
- Summer Pruning: Late June to August. Slows down growth, reduces new shoots, and controls lengthening growth.
- How to Prune?
- Planting Cut: Right after planting (spring) or the following spring (if planted in late autumn). Select 3-4 shoots as leader branches and cut them by one-third.
- Training Pruning (5-9 years): Encourages a pyramid-shaped crown with side branches that grow outward and have enough space for growth.
- Maintenance Pruning (after 9 years): Remove diseased, dead, or inward-growing branches to keep the crown open and healthy.
- Rejuvenation Pruning: For older trees needing intensive pruning. Only remove branches with a diameter of up to 5 cm.
- Column Plum Tree Pruning:
- Side Shoots: Cut back to 20–40 cm in early summer.
- Main Shoot: Cut back in June to slow growth. Height can be reduced by 50 cm each year.
- Care After Pruning:
- Regularly check for signs of diseases and pests.
- Apply tree wound sealant to cuts larger than 3 cm in diameter.
