How to Grow Fruit Trees in Containers

If you’re short on space or want a portable orchard, growing fruit trees in containers is a great solution.

Choosing the Right Fruit Trees:
Look for dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties that are well-suited for container growing:

  • Citrus (lemons, oranges, limes)
  • Apples (dwarf varieties like Fuji or Gala)
  • Figs
  • Cherries
  • Peaches

Selecting the Container:

  • Use a pot at least 18-24 inches wide with good drainage holes.
  • For heavy trees, choose a sturdy container like ceramic or wood.

Soil and Planting:

  • Use a high-quality potting mix enriched with compost. Avoid garden soil, as it compacts in containers.
  • Plant the tree at the same depth as it was in its nursery pot.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Water regularly but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 2-3 months.
  • Prune to shape the tree and remove any dead or diseased branches.
