How to Prune Rosemary

  1. When to Prune: Best done in spring or early summer (March to June). Avoid pruning too late in the fall.

  1. Tools: Use sharp pruning shears or loppers for thicker branches. Ensure tools are sharp to prevent damage.
  2. Pruning Smaller Plants:
    • Remove dead flowers and damaged branches first.
    • Trim 2–3 inches from the outer stems, being cautious not to cut too deeply.
    • Shape the plant to maintain a bushy appearance.
  3. Pruning Larger, Woody Shrubs:
    • Use loppers or a pruning saw for thick branches.
    • Cut back a third of the plant’s size, especially the dead or unhealthy parts.
  4. Using Clippings:
    • Replant the cuttings to propagate new plants or use them in cooking. You can also simmer them for a natural air freshener
