Primary Pruning (Dormant Season – Late Winter to Early Spring)

  • Remove branches when the tree is dormant to prevent attracting insects.
  • Remove deadwood, which can foster mold or fungi and spread to healthy parts.
  • Cut diseased branches using sterilized tools to prevent spreading infection.
  • Remove old, twiggy stems, especially on shrubby types, to encourage new growth.
  • Thin crowded areas for better airflow and tree health.
  • Remove shoots below the graft point on hybrid dogwoods.
  • Remove low branches if they obstruct walking or hinder airflow.

Secondary Pruning (Growing Season – Early Summer)

  • Snip flower buds at branch tips to encourage more side buds and fuller flowers.
  • Prune for better flowering by removing buds in June or early summer to avoid cutting off flowers prematurely.

Pruning should be done carefully to prevent damaging the tree, with appropriate tools like heavy shears or a handsaw. After pruning, watering the tree helps reduce stress.
