Pruning Your Lemon Tree: The Right Timing and Technique

The lemon tree (Citrus x limon) is a popular container plant in our climate, as it grows in pots and cannot extend its roots into deeper soil. Regular pruning is necessary, but it’s less intense compared to other fruit trees.

Types of Pruning:

  1. Maintenance Pruning: This should be done regularly to remove dead branches. It creates space for fresh growth and allows more light to reach the tree.
  2. Training Pruning: This is less frequent and helps shape the tree’s growth. The best time for this type of pruning is late winter or early spring (February to March).

How to Prune a Lemon Tree:

  • Use a sharp, clean pair of garden shears to avoid infection.
  • Remove dead branches all the way back to healthy wood, making sure there are no dead stubs left behind.
  • Cut off water shoots that do not bear fruit, as well as weak or inward-growing branches.
  • Trim excessively long branches back to the next branch or bud.

Key Tips:

  • Always use clean, sharp tools.
  • Cut back to a branching point or leaf axil to avoid damaging the tree.
  • After pruning, it’s important to fertilize the tree to ensure it starts the spring season off well.
