Turn Kitchen Waste into Compost and Liquid Fertilizer: A Simple DIY Guide

Transform your kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost and liquid fertilizer with this eco-friendly, dual-purpose composting method. Reduce landfill waste while enriching your garden soil—a win for the environment and your plants!

What You’ll Need

  • Two buckets/containers: One with small drain holes (fits inside the other).
  • A lid for the outer bucket (to keep pests out).
  • A faucet (installed on the inner bucket for liquid collection).
  • Compost or soil: Acts as a decomposition starter.
  • Kitchen scraps: Veggie peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, etc.
  • Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB): Enhances decomposition and reduces odor.
  • 1.5-liter bottle: For mixing PSB solution.
  • Mixing tool

Step-by-Step Composting System

1. Prepare the Buckets:

  • Drill small drain holes in the inner bucket.
  • Install a faucet 10 cm from the bottom of the inner bucket.
  • Nestle the inner bucket into the outer bucket, leaving space for liquid collection.

2. Start Layering:

  • Add a layer of kitchen waste to the inner bucket.
  • Cover it with compost or soil to aid decomposition.

3. Add the PSB Solution:

  • Mix 3 caps of PSB with 1.5 liters of water in a bottle.
  • Pierce the cap for even distribution, shake well, and pour over the waste layers.

4. Initial Rest Period:

  • Seal the inner bucket and let it sit for 7 days to kickstart decomposition.

5. Mix and Add More Waste:

  • After 7 days, open the bucket, mix the contents, and add more waste.
  • Repeat the layering and sealing process.

6. Repeat for 30 Days:

  • Continue the 7-day cycle for three more iterations (total 30 days).
  • Mix every 2–3 days to speed up decomposition.

7. Collect Liquid Fertilizer:

  • After 30 days, open the faucet to harvest nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer.
  • Keep the buckets sealed for ongoing composting.

8. Final Composting Phase:

  • Let the contents sit undisturbed for another 30 days (total 60 days).
  • By the end, the top bucket will contain rich compost, while the bottom bucket yields more liquid fertilizer.
